SIX Lessons Learnt From Chelsea WOES Against Everton-Mourinho Also CULPABLE
In an uncharacteristic fashion to the start of the season for a reigning champion, the Blues season is yet capitulating into the zone that is raising questions over the competence of Mourinho and members of the squad.
Chelsea were beaten black and blue/back to back by the Toffees for the second time running this season – they have so far let in 11 goals in five matches and are currently lying 17th place on the Premier League log.
THese are some of the lessons/observations from the match:
Begovic: Courtois has been sidelined with injury beyond three months. Begovic has shown by his show-off that he isn’t a capable replacement for the efficient Courtois – the former Stoke City shot stopper has conceded seven goals in three of his appearances which speaks volume of his prowess.
Ivanovic: The 31-year-old Serbian is the most culpable and the weakest link of the Chelsea defenders. Two of the goals conceded yesterday were from his wing. He lacks pace and zest at the right side of defense – Fielding Azpilicueta on the right side is what we look forward to.
Mikel Obi: The selection of Mikel left so much to be desired. His strength is not in his defending, neither is it in his passing abilities. Mourinho should not have featured the Nigerian international. The match against Everton was his first start and he aided and abated the distortion of the midfield.
Fabregas: The Spaniard was the mainstay of the Blues midfield last season but his show-offs this season has been lethargic and questionable. He made zero tackles, zero interceptions and zero assist in the match – Mourinho can place him on the bench for a match or two, to make him feel he isn’t indispensible. Football is a team game, he needs to play as a team member against his unambitious performance.
Diego Costa: The 26-year-old is yet to find his scoring boot after just a goal. He should focus more on scoring than picking on defenders that rise up to play well against him.
Mourinho: His squad selection was questionable yesterday. The selection of Mikel Obi was the beginning of the failure, and then the substitution he made was equally unappealing. Kennedy for Mikel when Willian was on the bench? It was a terrible call from the special one. Hopefully, when Oscar fully returns, we will see more of the silky forward.
