In the last few transfer windows, Chelsea have been linked to various defensive midfielders. From Morgan Schneridelin to Sami Khedira to Lucas Biglia to Charles Aránguiz and Lars Bender.
Chelsea definitely need another defensive midfielder, even a blind man knows that, however, the blues won’t be signing Charles Aránguiz as he has signed for Bayer Leverkusen, neither will they be getting any of Sami Khedira or Morgan Schneiderlin as both have joined Juventus and Manchester United respectively.
However, should Mourinho be willing to sign a truly reliable defensive midfielder, the signing of Charles Aránguiz by Bayer Leverkusen could open up a big opportunity for Mourinho to get one of his long term targets.
With Bayer Leverkusen Signing Charles Aránguiz, it means there is suddenly a chance for Chelsea to snap up Lars Bender who is reportedly available for just over £15 million. Lars Bender, should he sign for Chelsea, he will not only offer a reliable option to Matic but can oust Matic from the first team.
Matic no doubt is a very good player, but Lars Bender offers much more. Bender can play as a box to box midfielder and is also comfortable as a defensive midfielder which is his primary role. He can also play as a centre back.
At 26 years, his best years are still ahead of him. Whats more, Arsenal are interested in him and Chelsea signing him means preventing a rival club from getting him.
